There are many variations of poker; however, there are basic
rules which apply to all games of poker. Here, we will discuss those
basic rules, with specifics of the variations being discussed on subsequent
pages.
Forced Bets
Forced bets open a hand of poker. They are named so, because all participants
are required to add to the pot. Forced bets come in three variations:
Blinds, Antes, and Bring-ins. For specifics on these three types of forced
bet, refer to our List of Poker Jargon.
Dealing
The cards are shuffled by the dealer, and then cut by another player.
In home games the responsibility of dealing rotates around the table,
marked by a button or “buck.” In casinos a house dealer is
used; however, a buck is still rotated around the table to designate the
order of dealing.
Betting Rounds
After the initial round of dealing, a number of betting rounds take place.
There are several actions which can take place during this phase, as well
as some type of opportunity to develop your hand. The basic terms of play
are: Raise, Call, Check, Fold, and Open. For specifics on these terms,
refer to our List of Poker Jargon.
The Showdown
The final round of play, where player's cards are shown, and the winner
is determined, is known as the Showdown. Showdowns occur when there is
more than one player left at the end of play. Typically, the last player
to raise is required to show his hand first. The remaining players show
their hands in turn after this. It is common for players with losing hands
to fold, and not show their hands; although, their hand must still be
shown if another player requests it.
